Following a successful competition-year in the UK, Brentwood Trampoline Club member Scott Gregory (age 14) was elated to be selected for his first ever GB representation in the annual youth trampoline team match against Germany. Scott was selected on the basis of his performance in the UK National Finals where he finished in 3rd place in the under-15 age group.

Having achieved selection, however, it all nearly came to a disastrous end. As Scott was sitting attentively in class the rest of the 12-strong squad were gathering at Heathrow to travel to Röttenbach where the competition was to be held. It seemed the wrong date had been written on the kitchen calendar and he was not even packed yet. After a frantic day of calls and false starts, however, arrangements were made for Scott to travel out the following day and although he would miss training sessions and local hospitality he would at least be able to compete. Things could only get better, or so it seemed. British Gymnastics travel arrangers had organised an early morning flight but Scott would have to change at Frankfurt; unfortunately the inbound flight was late and the onward flight departed on time leaving Scott stranded for hours, finally arriving in the squad hotel at 11:30 the night before the competition.

The day of the competition started with two hours training at 9:30 and a return to the venue at 2:30 for final warm-ups and preparation before the competition started at 4pm. After a roller-coaster ride over the past day or so, 4pm was when Scott's nerves finally kicked-in and the enormity of what he was taking on occurred to him. Stepping onto the trampoline as the hall fell silent he was grateful for the calming presence of his personal coach, Paul Kitchen. Successfully completing his routines, Scott was delighted to end in 4th place just 0.1 behind the 3rd placed German and knowing that his scores contributed to an overall team victory for GB against Germany.

Speaking after the event, Paul Kitchen commented "Scott is on fire at the moment, his difficulty tariff has increased from 9.2 to 11.1 since the nationals in July and he has more in the bank. National youth squad coach John Beer was impressed with his performance and from discussion with him this will certainly not be his last appearance in a GB track suit." Scott commented "I thoroughly enjoyed myself and the adrenaline rush was awesome, I just hope that next time I can travel with the rest of the team and relax a little more."
